About the place ...

Sindhudurg Fort, located on an islet off the coast of Malvan Taluka, is one of the most iconic sea forts in India. Built in 1664 by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the fort stands as a symbol of Maratha naval power and architectural brilliance. Its name, Sindhudurg, literally means ‘Fort in the Sea’ (Sindhu = sea, Durg = fort), and it remains a top historical attraction in Maharashtra.

Constructed on Kurte Island, just 1 km from Malvan shore, the fort spans over 48 acres and is surrounded by massive walls rising 30 feet high and 12 feet thick, designed to withstand enemy attacks and rough sea waves. The fort has a unique zigzag design to mislead invaders and was strategically built using lead mixed with the foundation stone, making it impenetrable for centuries.

Inside the fort, you’ll find temples dedicated to Shivaji Maharaj, Bhavani Mata, and Mahadeo, as well as hidden freshwater wells that still function today. The Shivaji Maharaj temple, believed to be the only one where the great warrior king is worshipped as a deity, holds historical and spiritual importance.

Visitors can reach the fort via a short boat ride from Malvan Jetty. Guided tours are available and recommended to fully understand the significance and stories behind the fort’s construction and battles. The fort also offers panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and nearby beaches like Tarkarli and Chivla.

For history buffs, photographers, and architecture lovers, Sindhudurg Fort is a must-visit destination. It’s also a part of Maharashtra’s heritage tourism and is often included in Konkan coastal itineraries.
