About Jaigad Fort

14 km from the Ganpatipule, Jaigad fort is at the confluence point of the Arabian sea and river Shastri, besides the village Jaigad. Old British records called it Zygur. It has a strategic location to oversee trade routes from western seas through the Shastri River. A magnificent view of the Arabian seas and newly built power plant catch the eye of the observer. Port Angrey & a lighthouse is near the fort. Though most structures and buildings in the fort are in ruins, fortification still stands tall against all odds. Jaigad fort was built by the Sultan of Bijapur in the 16th century & redeveloped by Kanhoji Angrey. Afterward, in the 18th century, it was captured by the British. The fort is considered one of the chief ports on the western Coast. The Jaigad fort is under the protection and care of the Archeological Survey of India

Jaigad fort is an engineering marvel. The deep strench (Khandak) is built around the fort for strenghtening the defences. The door to the strench is near the main entrance, and a flight of steps leads from the main entrace to the main area. The entrance lies in between two bastions (Buruj). The Fort spans over 13 acres of land. Inside the Fort, A temple of lord Ganesha, and the palace of Kanhoji Angrey are still in good conditions. Pair of 70 feet deep wells are built in the Fort. 3rd well of 100 feet in depth can be seen near the lighthouse. The water of all the wells is sweet and can be used for drinking. 3 to 4 hours are sufficient to visit and see all there. But the magical view around the fort might engage you for more
