About Swatantrya Veer Sawarkar Smarak, Ratnagiri
Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Sawarkar was freedom fighter in Indian freedom war. Born in Nashik & went to England for further studies, he did all the possible activities to help freedom fighters in India against British from England. For which he was send back to India by ship. His escape from the ship is a historical event. After this brave escape he reached to a beach in France. But from there he was sent back to India. In India, he was arrested by British Government and sent to Andaman jail. He was shifted to Ratnagiri from Andaman. He was under positional arrest in Ratnagiri for a while. He was a poet and writer and a great contributor to Marathi literature. In his honor the memorial is established in Ratnagiri.
Sawarkar, did great work for lower caste people in Ratnagiri, He established a Temple, named Patit Pawan Mandir, accessible to all castes. The memorial of Swanatryveeer Vinayak Damodar Sawarkar is established in the compound of this temple in Ratnagiri. On the first floor of the memorial, Gatha Balidanachi – A glorious history of Indian Freedom Fight has been Showcased. A replica of the boat ‘ Maria’, from which Sawarkar historically escaped to meet his motherland, is displayed.
