About the place ...
Gopalgad Fort, also known as Anjanvel Fort, is a historic sea fort located in Guhagar Taluka near the village of Anjanwel. Overlooking the shimmering Arabian Sea, this 16th-century fort was strategically built to guard the coast and has witnessed the reign of several powers including the Marathas, British, and Portuguese.
The fort’s unique location atop a cliff gives it panoramic views of the surrounding sea, lush green hills, and the nearby Anjanvel Lighthouse. It is believed that Shivaji Maharaj took control of the fort in the late 1600s, making it an important coastal defense point in the Maratha naval strategy.
Although parts of the fort are in ruins today, the massive laterite walls, bastions, and a freshwater tank inside remain intact and are worth exploring. The fort is surrounded by natural beauty and visiting it during monsoon or post-monsoon offers a dramatic view of the sea waves crashing against the rocky coastline.
Gopalgad is a popular destination for history enthusiasts and trekkers. The short trek to the top is moderate and rewarding, especially for photographers and nature lovers. The nearby village of Anjanvel is also known for its quiet charm and traditional Konkani hospitality.
More information about this fort can be found in the ancient document named ‘Anjanvelachi Vahivat’
