Perched atop a forested mountain in Jaoli Taluka, the Meruling Mahadev Temple is a revered spiritual landmark steeped in history and legend. Locally known as ‘Merumba’, this temple is renowned as the highest Shiva temple in the Mahabaleshwar and Wai region. The picturesque ascent offers breathtaking views over green valleys, winding rivers, and ancient villages that dot the Sahyadri landscape.

The temple’s origins are traced to the era of the Pandavas, with local lore claiming these epic heroes carried the massive stones used in its construction. The sanctum’s most distinctive feature is a self-manifested Shivalinga (Swayambhu) with an uneven base punctuated by seven holes—traditionally believed to have been made by Bhima to draw water for his brothers and Draupadi during their exile. Even today, water flows perennially from these holes, keeping the Shalunka constantly replenished and adding to the temple’s miraculous reputation

Structurally, the temple is surrounded by high walls and fort-like corner towers. Its multi-level design includes a main entrance hall (with sculpted Nandi), a second hall featuring an ancient Ganesh idol flanked by Hanuman and Devi sculptures, and a sanctum beneath three vaulted domes. The hall is home to the iron bell gifted by Chimaji Appa after his victorious campaign at Vasai, and the sanctum produces a remarkable echo—any sound made here is heard up to five times.

Nearby the temple stands a cave where Shri Brahmendra Swami meditated, drawing disciples with his spiritual presence, while an adjacent stepwell supplies perennial water for rituals and devotees’ baths. To the right of the temple walls sits the ancient Ramvardayini Devi shrine, with its own Shiva lingam and Nandi.

Annual highlights include the Chaitra Shuddha Dashami fair—highlighted by a dramatic Shiva–Parvati wedding—along with feasts on Shravan Mondays, ritual river baths, and ongoing worship through the year. Because the temple sits in a cool, green mountain setting, it is a highly favored monsoon and winter destination for both pilgrims and nature-lovers.
