About the place ...
Built by King Jhanj of the Shilahara dynasty as one of twelve sacred Shiva temples between the Bhima and Godavari rivers, Amruteshwar Temple features remarkable Hemadpanthi and Bhumija architecture. Every inch of its stonework is adorned with exquisite carvings—divine figures, floral motifs, and rare mithuna (erotic) imagery reminiscent of India’s classical temples.
The temple’s unique layout has a west-facing main shrine and an eastward Nandi Mandap, with entrances from both directions. Descend six to seven steps to the sanctuary—always moist due to a live spring below the sanctum, considered the source of the “Amritvahini Pravara” river. During monsoons, the sanctum often floods, submerging the three-tiered lingam—a rare form seen nowhere else.
Intricate pillars and ceiling murals fill the sabhamandap, featuring hundreds of miniature figures supported by yaksha carvings. Lattice windows draw sunlight across the pillared interiors, casting dazzling patterns through the stone. The outer walls are covered with geometric patterns and sculptures of gods, gandharvas, apsaras, and more. The ornate spire (Shikhara) displays layered mesh-carved miniature towers—a signature of Bhumija style, blending northern Nagara and southern Dravidian elements
Beyond the temple is a square stepped tank, Pushkarni, with embedded shrines and images of Ganesh and Vishnu. Locals revere it as “Vishnu Tirtha,” said to have mystical origins from the Samudra Manthan legend. The temple is registered and protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, ensuring its art and architecture are preserved for future generations
Amruteshwar Temple is not just a site for worship, but a pilgrimage for explorers, trekkers, and heritage enthusiasts, with nearby attractions like Ratangad Fort, Bhandardara Lake, and Kalsubai Peak making it a gateway for adventure
