Shree Uttareshwar Temple

In the charming coastal village of Diveagar, celebrated for its Golden Ganesha Temple and 5 km stretch of silver sands, the ancient Shree Uttareshwar Temple stands as a remarkable tribute to Maharashtra’s stone-carved lamp traditions. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is distinguished by its rare collection of 57 deepmalas (lamp towers) — a sight unlike any other in the state.

Located at the northern edge of Diveagar, legends recall that in ancient times, the lamps here would light themselves at dusk and extinguish at dawn, casting a mystical glow across the village and earning its name — “Diveagar,” meaning village of lamps. Built from sturdy red laterite stone, the temple’s fortified courtyard is lined on all sides with deepmalas, each standing tall on a broad square base, tapering upward with projecting stone arms designed to hold rows of oil lamps.

Deepmalas are an iconic architectural feature in Maharashtrian temples since the Yadava era, serving both devotional and aesthetic purposes. The Uttareshwar Temple’s historical significance is further elevated by accounts of Peshwa patronage. Records note that in 1772 CE, Rani Ramabai Peshwe, wife of Madhavrao Peshwa, visited this shrine to pray for her husband’s health. The temple has since received restoration support from the government, alongside the famed Golden Ganesha Temple nearby.

Set upon a platform, the temple’s layout comprises an open sabhamandap (hall), a main assembly hall, and a circumambulatory path (pradakshina marg) around the sanctum. At the center of the main hall sits a finely carved Nandi idol, facing the sanctum’s self-manifested Shivalinga. The ancient sanctum is built in the Hemadpanti style, featuring a graceful arched entrance crowned with a carving of Lord Ganesha.

Beyond the main shrine, the temple complex includes the Hanuman Mandir, home to a standing idol of Hanuman, and the Kalbhairav Temple, which enshrines deities like Bhairav, Jogeshwari, and Bhavani. These subsidiary shrines reflect the layered spiritual traditions of Diveagar, making it not just a site for Shiva worship but a broader place of reverence for multiple deities.

Festivals are celebrated with grandeur, especially Mahashivratri, Ram Navami, and Hanuman Jayanti, which attract large gatherings of devotees. On these occasions, the deepmalas are illuminated, transforming the courtyard into a stunning ocean of flickering lights. Darshan is offered daily from 6:15 a.m. to 9:15 p.m., allowing ample time for visitors to soak in the temple’s peaceful ambiance.
